Orsii-Polaroid_470
If you have ever dealt with Jazzman Gerald, then you will know his right hand woman over at Jazzman Records, the fabulous Orsii. If you don’t know her, you are about to get to know her a little better. Orsii not only manages the Jazzman Records and Fat City Record shops but is a digger and great DJ in her own right. Representing the ladies in the DJ game, Orsii can be heard playing along side heavy hitters such as Gerald and Gilles Peterson among others (as if that isn’t some good company already) throughout the world. She has a really great outlook on life, music, digging and DJing. Her old radio show “Little Miss Sunshine” on laid Back radio can be listened to on the internet (recommended!) and her monthly show with Jazzman is a belter as well. It is our distinct pleasure to have her on the pages of Flea Market Funk this week in Big Ups. If you’re in Old London Town, stop by either of the shops and get some tips on great records and some good conversation from a sister who’s doing it by herself. Big Ups!

Personify-Polaroid_470

This week we bring you some love from Philly with Mr. James Norman aka Personify. A humble, cool cat who I’ve had the pleasure of spinning with (and will hopefully get to Philly in 2014 to sling some 7″s with again), Personify is a seasoned digger, great DJ, and part of the thriving Funk and Soul scene in the City of Brotherly Love. DJing strictly for the love, he is a digger and DJ after Flea Market Funk’s heart. A member of the Little Big Things Crew, these guys are making big noise on the East Coast and places further West with their monthly parties. Keeping Funk and Soul alive, along with 45 RPM culture, Personify is the real deal. Enjoy this interview, because it’s a really great read. Thanks to James for being part of the Big Ups series.

DJ-Mr-Thing-Polaroid_470

DJ Mr. Thing is the dictionary definition of the words “digging in the crates”. The former DMC Champion (solo and team with The Scratch Perverts), turntablist, producer, and crate digger DJ Mr. Thing represents Kent in the Southeast of England and represents it well. As a seasoned DJ, he has collaborated with such luminaries as DJ Premier and DJ Spinna among others. He has also opened for and toured with such legends as Jazzy Jeff, The Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Slum Village and more. As a producer, he’s dropped efforts for Yungun and worked a variety of remixes throughout his career. Still repping vinyl record culture to the fullest, this guy brings heat. If you don’t know about Mr. Thing, you are in for a treat. Check his Boiler Room set below for further proof. It is with extreme pleasure that we bring you one of the UK’s finest selectors to the pages of Big Ups today. Enjoy.

RAMBO-Salinas-Polaroid_470

I met RAMBO Salinas a few years ago when we spun together at a Hot Peas & Butta event at Fat Buddah here in NYC. A cool cat who had some heavy records, he dropped a fantastic set on the Tokyo Soul night in the LES. One of the few Lowrider/ Chicano Soul dudes I have ever met, he is the first digger here in Big Ups that runs DEEP in that category. A DJ and digger that stays very true to his craft, his hard working attitude in life shows through in his style. Let’s head up to Minneapolis, MN and get down with part of the MPLS Hot Pants Crew, and see what the Twin City via Texas connection is all about. My pleasure to get RAMBO in Big Ups this week. Also, via Mr. Salinas, the gun is fake in the photo, and was found in a dig with some great records. Found DJ product logo, what a bonus. Please enjoy!

DJ-Shred-One-Polaroid_470

Shred One and her husband Andrew aka Meaty Ogre run the very excellent Cherries Records label, putting out the best in Modern Funk, Soul, and R & B. They have been putting out bangers for more than a minute. When I interviewed Andrew in his Big Ups, they were repping The Windy City, but since have become NYC residents, repping Ridgewood, Queens and are a part of the DJ crew residing in that borough. We can honestly say, that this is the first husband and wife DJ team we have interviewed here in Big Ups on Flea Market Funk. A first. We are excited to have Sheila here representing the ladies this week. We’re committing to getting a few more female DJs in Big Ups this year as well, so keep an eye out for them. So sit back and enjoy a DJ and label owner who is doing big things in our community. When you have DJs like Q Tip, Pete Rock, Chairman Mao, Gaslamp Killer, DJ Spinna, endorsing your product, you’re doing something right. Enjoy Shred One people!

DJ-Riz-Polaroid-rust_470
DJ Riz put out one of my favorite breaks records, Live From Brooklyn. As a digger, I remember playing that thing over, and over (and over) trying to figure out the samples and breaks. It’s definitely something I go back to when I’m writing, or just chilling. A great record put together seamlessly, and a phone call from Biz Markie, I mean what can be better? A former athlete and radio talent, Riz is a founding member of The Crooklyn Clan, as well as MC Serch’s former tour DJ. He is a respected digger and producer known all over the world. Whether perfecting a DJ routine, killing it in a club, or being the DJ for the National Football League, DJ Riz is as well rounded as you can get. A dude that has been doing it for two decades, we have maximum respect for this guy. It’s our pleasure to have DJ Riz featured this week in our Big Ups interview. Consistency=Longevity, and Riz is as consistent as it gets. Enjoy.

HeavySoulBrutha Dave is one of those guys who just lives for music. One of the most enthusiastic people I have ever met that is genuinely a champion for the vinyl cause. Whether it’s dusty Stax releases or the latest Modern Funk or Soul, Dave is passionate for it all. His excellent site, Put The Needle On The Record has been keeping readers informed and turned on to good music for years, and his all vinyl mixes on Mixcloud have put him in the Top 100 Mixcloud DJs more than once. A well rounded digger, Dave has started to take the HSB live show in and around the Richmond, VA. Catch him out if you can. Great to have HeavySoulBrutha in this week’s Big Ups. Please enjoy.

DJ-Mike-Scott-Polaroid_470

This past Summer I DJ’d at the Major League Soccer All Star Game in Kansas City, Kansas for the crew at Bumpy Pitch/ The Original Winger. At some point, I got into a conversation with one of the owners of Sporting Kansas City. he asked me what I was doing ere, and as soon as I said DJ, he said: “You have to meet Mike Scott, he’s the Sporting KC official DJ.” So two hours later I’m at the Sporting KC building in Downtown KC, on the rooftop bar, eating some food by the fire, and drinking a Boulevard Brewing Wheat beer. I approach Mike and tell him who sent me. It was as if we had known each other for years. We spoke for more than an hour (while he was DJing, thanks Mike for being so cool). Mike is a humble guy, a terrific digger/ DJ, and after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina, made his way to Kansas City and calls the city his home. With a collection of over 60,000 records, the guy knows his music and his way around vinyl. He is the man about town, the go to DJ in KC. His style flows from genre to genre effortlessly, and if you are in the KC area, I urge you to go check him out. he has toured with Dave Chapelle, played alongside legends such as DJ AM, Biz Markie, Grandmaster Flash and many others. In other words, DJ Mike Scott is the real deal. Flea Market Funk is proud to have DJ Mike Scott in the latest installment of Big Ups. Please enjoy.

DJ Blueprint and I started our respective sites right around the same time. This talented DJ, crate digger, producer, drummer, and beatmaker has been holding it down in mighty Luxembourg for quite a while in a variety of different ways. As a DJ, he’s played all over Europe and the UK, rocking sets with funky and soulful records for audiences in clubs and festivals alike. He is a member in one of Luxembourg’s well known Hip Hop bands ‘de läb’, playing drums and producing ill beats. Mike is a humble guy with an arsenal of heat in his record box, and I’m proud to say he’s on a short list of long time friends through Flea Market Funk. We are happy to have him on the pages of Big Ups today, and if you find yourself in Luxembourg, look him up, he just might have some records to sell to you. Enjoy!

I first heard Tim “Love” Lee on a track from The Chemical Brothers Live At The Social Vol. 1, which I promptly played until I couldn’t play any more. The track, “Again Son” was this aural assault of drums that would have the cleverest of B Boys up rocking to the beat and the James Brown sample. With over 20 years of quality producing and DJing under his belt, confessed synth nerd and head honcho over at Tummy Touch Records is a busy man. His latest effort reworks two classic KPM 1000 series library records with Shawn Lee and has just been released. It is with great pleasure that we have Tim in our pages of Big Ups today.
